Site visit to Kurtai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, Indonesia

OPAL Indonesia organized a visit to the project sites in Kutai Kartanegara from 12 to 16 September 2016. Participants included most of the OPAL Indonesian team (IPB, WWF Indonesia and CIFOR), representatives from ETH Zürich and two delegates from SNF (Claude Martin and Peter Verburg). The visit was an opportunity to get to know some of the project’s sites, to engage with stakeholders in the region, and for the SNF delegates to see first-hand some of the work we do (as part of their review process). During these 4 days the team was constantly on the move, visiting various communities, meeting stakeholders–including farmers, fishermen, district officials, representatives of oil palm companies, and discussing with them the various environmental, economic and social challenges in the region.

Local people were very warm and welcoming, we had very interesting discussions on how the livelihoods of local communities have changed in recent years, the challenges ahead for oil palm producers and farmers, issues of land tenure and wild life conflict. On the last day after playing one of the games developed during the Commod Worskshop held the previous week, all participants agreed that the visit was a success and very productive.

A special recognition to Heru, Arya and all the Indonesian Team for the excellent organization of the visit.
